10 Golden Rules to Consider Before Hair Transplant Operation
Hair transplant is a medical operation that requires meticulous planning and increases the quality of life and self-confidence of individuals with its aesthetic results. Achieving the best desired result on this journey is directly related not only to the operation itself but also to the care you show before the operation. The one or two-week period before stepping into our clinic significantly affects the quality of your recovery process and the health of the transplanted grafts.
Here are 10 golden rules you must follow to guide you in this important process and maximize the success of the operation:
1. Be Completely Transparent with Your Doctor
This is the first and most important rule. During the consultation, you must share all your current health problems, regular medications, allergies, and past operations completely with your doctor. This information ensures that your operation plan is created specifically and safely for you.
2. Pause Blood Thinners and Supplements
Blood thinners such as Aspirin and Coumadin can increase the risk of bleeding during and after the operation. Similarly, some supplements like vitamin E, fish oil, and ginseng also have blood-thinning effects. You will be asked to stop using these medications and supplements from the date recommended by your doctor (usually 7-10 days before the operation). If you are taking medication for a chronic illness, never stop it without consulting your doctor.
3. Quit Smoking
Smoking narrows blood vessels, reducing the amount of oxygen going to tissues. This slows down the healing of the donor area and negatively affects the nourishment of the newly transplanted hair roots (grafts). Quitting smoking at least 1 week before the operation is critical for graft health and your overall healing speed.
4. Stay Away from Alcohol
Alcohol causes dehydration (fluid loss) in the body and can affect the blood's clotting mechanism. It can also interact with the local anesthetic drugs used in the operation. You must completely stop alcohol consumption at least 3 to 7 days before your hair transplant operation.
5. Keep Your Scalp Clean, Avoid Chemicals
Avoid applying chemical products like gel, spray, and hair conditioner to your hair in the days before the operation. Arriving at the clinic on the morning of the operation having washed your hair only with a mild shampoo is important for a hygienic working environment.
6. Choose Comfortable Clothes for the Day of Surgery
It is very important that you wear front-buttoned or zippered clothes (shirts, cardigans, etc.) that you can easily pass over your head on the day of the operation and afterward. Tight-collared t-shirts or sweaters that might rub against your head can damage the transplanted grafts.
7. Get a Good Night's Sleep
Make sure to sleep for at least 8 hours the night before the operation. A well-rested body responds better to stress, and healing mechanisms work more efficiently.
8. Eat Healthy and Drink Plenty of Water
Eating a balanced and healthy diet throughout the week before the operation will increase your body resistance. Consuming plenty of water is highly beneficial for the health of your skin and tissues. Having a light breakfast on the morning of the operation helps keep your blood sugar balanced.
9. Limit Caffeine Consumption
It is recommended not to consume coffee and other caffeinated beverages 24 hours before the operation. Caffeine can slightly increase blood pressure and cause sensitivity in some individuals.
10. Make Your Logistics Planning
It is not recommended to drive after the operation. Arrange with a relative to drop you off at your home or hotel, or arrange a transfer service. Also, do not forget to take a few days off from work to rest after the operation.
Adhering to these rules will ensure that your hair transplant operation goes comfortably and that you take the first and most important step towards achieving the natural and healthy results you desire. Remember, you can always stay in touch with our team during this process.
